THE new-look Trafalgar Square is officially open - after 18 months of building work costing an estimated [pounds sterling]25 million.
Standing on the new 16-step grand central staircase linking the National Gallery to the main part of the square, Mayor Ken Livingstone said: "I am delighted to give the square back to Londoners. Trafalgar Square was originally dedicated to the public for their free and unfettered use. Today it meets that objective more than at any time since it was first built."
