THE DEMAND FOR precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) has been flat to down slightly this year in both North American and European markets. Demand for PCC's primary consumer, uncoated wood-free or freesheet paper (office paper), has seen weak demand primarily because of the sluggish economy. Despite recent lackluster conditions, however, PCC producers are proceeding with investment plans, highlighted by market leader Minerals Technologies Inc.'s (MTI) agreement with International Paper (IP) last month for extending eight PCC satellite plant supply agreements.
