When John Elwell went to Literacy Volunteers of Oswego County nine years ago, he couldn't read or write.
Now, he's created pamphlets and written an essay about his life. He's spoken at fund-raisers for the United Way and has become an active community member.
This would be an achievement for anyone, but Elwell's situation is unique. He has cerebral palsy and high anxiety. He has also recovered from a 27-year drug addiction.
"People are interested and they want to know about my life," Elwell, 51, said recently. "I write about my childhood, my addiction and spiritual aspects of my life."
