Like our ancestors, most of the dog breeds we're familiar with originated in other countries.
The American Kennel Club calls to our attention during this month of patriotism the breeds that were developed on American soil.
For instance, consider the Australian shepherd.
Despite its name, this breed's ancestors came not from Australia but the Basque region of the Pyrennes, between Spain and France, according to AKC officials.
