Jul. 4--NORFOLK, Va.--Norfolk's wish to become a player in the cruise line industry took a big step Thursday when Holland America announced the city would serve as the home port of the Maasdam by January.
The 10-year-old Maasdam, which can hold almost 1,300 passengers, has been sailing out of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., but will begin 10-day and 11-day cruises to the Caribbean out of Norfolk. A variety of cruise lines have scheduled occasional stops in Norfolk since 2001, the same year the city approved a major extension of its pier, but this will be the only current ship to make ...
