Jul. 4--One more effort by Albert Lea to remain a major meatpacking town failed Thursday when Premium Pork Allied Producers, a startup meat company owned by farmers, said it will locate in St. Joseph, Mo.
"It's a disappointment. But we've got three or four more potential manufacturers we're negotiating with, although they may not involve pork," said Jeff Fjelstad, an Albert Lea City Council member.
Fjelstad said Albert Lea ended up losing a "bidding war" to subsidize the new meatpacking company. Albert Lea offered tax-increment financing and incentives ...
