State regulators decided Wednesday to recommend the federal government allow SBC Wisconsin to provide long-distance telephone service.
The Public Service Commission unanimously agreed to advise the Federal Communications Commission that SBC Wisconsin has met congressional requirements showing the company has allowed local competition in its market. SBC Wisconsin must prove that to qualify to provide long-distance service.
SBC was a regional Bell company when the Bell System divested in 1984. Regional Bell companies were prohibited from providing interstate long-distance service. The 1996 Telecommunications Act required ...
