A fire that ravaged the Farmland Foods pork-processing plant two years ago still smolders in the hearts of Albert Lea residents. And that made Thursday's news that a proposed $130 million plant has spurned the southern Minnesota community to locate instead in Missouri all the more demoralizing.
Premium Pork Allied Producers announced plans to take its plant and an estimated 1,200 jobs to St. Joseph, Mo., despite a long and intense courtship by Albert Lea, a city of 18,000. Ever the bridesmaid, Albert Lea had placed its hope last November in landing a Ford Motor plant, which went instead to Menomonie, Wis.
