In 1949, Christian Dior's instinct for innovatory couture (the 'New Look' and later the 'A-line') had established him as one of the world's greatest designers.
That year Dior looked back to the ancient world for inspiration where beautiful women were shown in bronze or marble sculpture in the great museums of the world.
Dior's Venus and 'Junon' designs were realised in his fashion house in miraculous 18th-century grey chiffon petals richly overlaid with iridescent blue, dark green and gold sequins and paillettes.
