John Hare, explorer and founder of the Wild Camel Protection Foundation, recently accomplished what is probably his greatest feat yet: crossing the Sahara by camel
Until the end of the 19th century, the camel road from Kukawa, near Lake Chad in northern Nigeria, to Tripoli in Libya was a slave route. The last foreigner known to have travelled its entirety was the Swiss-born British national Hanns Vischer, in 1906, who received the RGS Back Award for completing the crossing.
Almost 100 years later, John Hare was inspired by Vischer's book to follow in his footsteps. "It wasn't a straightforward undertaking," he says. ...
