It may come as a bit of a surprise that the United States is fourth in terms of economic activity generated by nonprofit workers (including volunteers), according to the latest phase of a Johns Hopkins University multiyear study.

In the United States, 9.8 percent of economic activity comes in the form of nonprofit work. Just ahead are Belgium and Ireland at a little more than 10 percent.
