TOKYO, July 4 Asia Pulse - NEC Electronics Corp. has developed a chip set that is said to help significantly reduce the cost of using cellular phones equipped with GPS (Global Positioning System) functionality.

The chip set gives the cell phone the ability to receive GPS signals and calculate its location without placing a call to a special GPS server.

The phone can calculate its own position, so the user does not have to pay for the air time involved in connecting to the server.
