Sales Slump Blamed On Distribution, Not Demand

Life insurance distribution must be reformed to counter a five-year slide in the number of new life policies issued, industry experts and a recent study have concluded.

Archer L. Edgar, author of "The Individual Life Sales Doldrums," found "diminished supply is probably influencing market results more than demand factors are."

Supply, in this instance, is expressed strickly in terms of the number of producers. Factors like the number of agencies, underwriting capacity and the level of investment in the distribution system also were considered, but were rejected for a variety of reasons.
