In early 2001, The San Antonio Orthopaedic Group LLP (TSAOG), an orthopedic practice composed of 14 providers and four locations in the greater San Antonio area, wanted to become independent from a larger orthopedic group in Houston of which it had been a member for three years. The physicians were dissatisfied with the 45-member group's mainframe practice management system that required excessive training, was not user-friendly and processed claims poorly, producing an unacceptable 120-day accounts receivable (A/R) rate--almost twice the industry average of 72 days.
