Air cargo industry hit with stiff cost increases in middle of service enhancement drive
Late 1990 and early 1991 provided unfriendly skies for the air cargo industry.
Carrier costs jumped when jet fuel prices soared as a result of the crisis in the Middle East. At the same time, the economy provided little growth and a lot more cost-conscious transportation buyers.
Alex J. Milovic, president of forwarder Right-O-Way, says of 1990: "The two issues we faced were rising costs-how much we could absorb before passing it on to our customers-and the recession, with customers pulling back and reducing costs. Those are contradictory objectives. "
