Farmer Jack is experimenting with dollar-store sections at 10 grocery stores and may roll them out in more stores this year.
"Obviously, the market has been very receptive to the dollar-store concept,'' said Farmer Jack President Mike Carter. "This gives us access to that market.''
Although Farmer Jack declined to provide sales figures, retail experts say the main reason to get into the category is to prevent customers from making separate trips to dollar stores by adding something new to the store.
The dollar store was chosen because it is among the fastest-growing retail segments.
