Optical Imaging System Lets Library Patrons |See' the Big Picture
Searching through the 225,000 photographs for one particular shot used to be a massive undertaking for researchers at the Birmingham Public Library, according to Dr. Marvin Whiting, Archivist and Curator of Manuscripts. "But with our new optical imaging system, CD*STAR, we can call up any photo we have on file in less than 15 seconds," he stated.
Electronic imaging, long considered the wave of the future, is availabe today for archival storage and retrieval. Libraries are |made to order' locations for systems that can store massive amounts of data and images on optical disks.
