In recent years there has been a resurgence of interest in the nature and significance of cognitive style as a potentially significant variable for better understanding and predicting differences in behaviour in organizations at both the individual and group levels of analysis (Hurst, Rush, & White, 1989; Kirton, 1989; Kirton & McCarthy, 1988; Leonard, Scholl, & Kowalski, 1999; Rickards & Gaston, 1995). Unfortunately, however, progress has been hampered by a proliferation of alternative constructs and assessment instruments, each purporting to capture individual differences in cognitive style (Riding & Rayner, 1998; Streufert & Nogami, 1989).
