Phone users will get the benefits of full competition in telecommunications thanks to a recent state Public Service Commission decision that opens the way for SBC Wisconsin to offer long-distance service.
The move, if also approved by the federal government, will help hold down prices and improve service. To get the nod from state regulators, SBC has opened its network to key competitors. PSC chairman Burneatta Bridge promises that the ruling is "in the long-term interest of Wisconsin consumers."
Currently, just three companies -- AT&T, MCI WorldCom and Sprint -- have a lock on 71 percent of the state's long-distance calling. Another major player could save consumers ...
