Brazilian musicologist, teacher, and conductor Jose Maria Neves passed away in Rio de Janeiro on 27 November 2002 after battling a lymphatic cancer. As a member of LAMR's Editorial Board, he spared no efforts in supporting the advancement of Brazilian and Latin American musicological studies.
His advanced music studies took place in Paris, first at the Paris Conservatoire in 1970 (under Pierre Schaeffer), then at the Institute of Musicology of the University of Paris-Sorbonne (Master's 1971, and Doctorate 1976, under Jacques Chailley), and the Paris Catholic Institute (choral conducting under Stephane Caillat).
