Kirch Wins East Germany Battle Regains Rights On Huge Film Package

Leo Kirch has done it again. He fought the battle of TV rights for the newly unified eastern lands of Germany, pulled the usual strings, won his usual victory and made a heap of money in the process.

The basic issue was as simple as it was predictable. Kirch, the key supplier of features for German television, and particularly a key figure with the ZDF network, objected to the idea that ZDF and ARD, the other main national channel, should include eastern Germany for no additional fee, when airing pictures sold by Kirch to the two chains.
