A major milestone in an almost three-year saga was passed on November 5, when the members of 52 countries, including the European Union, diamond industry organizations and NGOs, meeting in the Swiss town of Interlaken, gave their approval to the rough diamond certification and monitoring system devised during the Kimberley Process, which is aimed at curbing the flow of rough diamonds mined in conflict areas of Africa into the legitimate diamond pipeline. The participants also committed themselves to the simultaneous launch of the system on January 1, 2003.
