Of all the places they could have gone to practice flying, Orville and Wilbur Wright chose a flat stretch of sand at the base of Kill Devil Hill.
This year, the town of Kill Devil Hills celebrates the centennial of flight and its 50th anniversary. Now through December, town officials are hosting events such as ice cream socials and a fall carnival that are intended to give townsfolk "an opportunity to visit community neighbors, learn more about what we have going on and ask questions if there's something in town they're not familiar with," said Town Clerk Mary Quidley.
