The European Union (EU) policy on genetically modified organisms (GMOs) came under attack once again from US President George W Bush. Speaking at the Biotechnology Industry Organisation (BIO) conference in Washington DC, on 23 June, Bush said: 'Acting on unfounded, unscientific fears, many European governments have blocked the import of all new biotech crops.'
Bush then suggested the EU policy was not helping combat famine in Africa: 'Because of these artificial obstacles, many African nations avoid investing in biotechnology, worried that their products will be shut out of important European markets.'
