British Virgin Islands authorities have charged a St. Thomas boat owner and his captain with fishing illegally in BVI waters and each man faces a maximum fine of US$500,000, reports the Virgin Islands Daily News (July 9, 2003). The 38-foot charter fishing vessel was seized June 13 during a fishing tournament. The seizure sparked outrage among charter boat owners on St. Thomas, who fear the action could harm relations between the two jurisdictions and jeopardize St. Thomas charters who fish the popular North Drop, part of which lies in BVI waters.
