The V.I. Government is in talks with two groups about opening medical schools in the territory, most likely on St. Croix. Gov. Charles Turnbull began the discussions some time ago, according to Paul Gimenez, chief legal counsel to the governor, reports The Virgin Islands Daily News (July 2, 2003). "This was the governor's idea," Gimenez said. "Three years ago, he started to shop around the medical school idea." However, even if the governor issues a charter today, it will be at least two or three years before classes began:
