With the advent of prospective payment, hospitals and health systems sharply focused on how to remain profitable. This only intensified as payers, led by the federal government, continued to squeeze the flow of reimbursement for health care services.
But as eyes are fixed on the bottom line, another problem demands attention and it is one that cannot be easily solved. The growing shortage of qualified health care workers is a condition that the American Hospital Association described as the greatest threat to America's health care system.
