 In November of 1991, then FIFA President Dr. Joao Havelange saw one of his top 
 initiatives come to life as women's football would finally have a championship 
 of its own. 
 
 The first Women's World Championship was held in the People's Republic of 
 China. Twelve nations competed in the resoundingly successful tournament that 
 attracted large, enthusiastic crowds.
