MONROVIA, Liberia _ Explosions rocked Liberia's bloody and beleaguered capital Sunday as rebel forces and government fighters loyal to President Charles Taylor struggled for control of the city. Swarms of civilians sought to flee the violence but many failed.
"We're dying," moaned Hawa Zoedwa, 40, struck in her thigh by shrapnel Sunday morning. "We're going backwards. Please help us."
The rebels _ many of them wearing sneakers, toting Kalashnikov assault rifles and smoking marijuana _ appear intent on encircling Monrovia, attacking the downtown area from two directions and seizing control of the airport road. They ...
