It's halftime in the game of summer. And as anyone who's staked out a sideline knows, there are two ways to go into halftime: ahead, with a momentum that carries the promise of victory, or behind, which requires a pep talk to reignite the desire to win.
Of course, what we win is fall. But games have been played for less. Maybe we'll go into overtime.
