NEW YORK--For years Caribbean hotel executives have verbally sparred with cruise line executives. Hotellers say the floating resorts steal their business, but cruise lines counter that their guests-many of them first-time cruisers-would never go on vacation on an island without first seeing it. Some hoteiers believe cruisers who disembark by the thousands spoil the destination, driving away land vacationers, but cruise lines note say their passengers spend millions of dollars ashore.
