BY A sorrowful quirk of fate,Graham Maddocks died the day before Jack Davis, who at 108 was Britain's oldest survivor of World War I ,having fought at the Somme with the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry.
For Graham was a military historian whose prodigious knowledge of the Great War was passed on to the children he taught at Birkenhead Park High School. His 27 trips to the graveyards in France gave pupils a glimpse of the sacrifices made by their forebears.
In contrast to many of his generation,Graham did not entirely subscribe to the view that the war had been the slaughter of innocents led by fools. Against this easy stance,fuelled to some extent by ...
