When Wynfred Russell came to the United States in 1991, he suffered a rude awakening.

Growing up in Liberia - the West African nation to which President Bush is considering sending peacekeeping troops - Russell was taught about the special U.S.-Liberian relationship. The United States created Liberia as a place to resettle freed slaves. Liberia modeled itself after the United States and uses the U.S. dollar as its currency. Its capital, Monrovia, is named for U.S. President James Monroe.
