THE low-carbohydrate, high-protein Atkins Diet may be proven to take off the pounds - but it doubles the risk of kidney stones, say experts.

British doctors say the Atkins Diet - followed by celebrities such as Catherine Zeta- Jones and Jennifer Aniston - is a 'one-way ticket' to the painful condition.

And in the U.S., physicians are so concerned they have backed an advertising campaign warning consumers of 'surprising results'.

Clinical biochemist Dr Bill Robertson and his team at the Institute of Urology and Nephrology at University College Medical School, London, are worried that women following the diet are unaware of the dangers.
