Jul. 22--Santa Cruz's chances at snaring the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary visitors center have been buoyed by a consultant's report ranking the top floor of the Cocoanut Grove as the No. 1 site among the final four selected.
City officials have lobbied strongly to bring the center to Santa Cruz in the hopes it will help revitalize the area down by the boardwalk and municipal wharf.
The old Fun Spot, located near the wharf and now home to a temporary skateboard park, was ranked the No. 3 site, just behind a bluff above Seacliff State Beach.
