It was a lesson in punctuality and preparedness. Australias Prime Minister John Howard agreed to speak at a luncheon cohosted by the Asia Society and the Australian Embassy, on July 15th, during his brief, 2-day visit to Manila. Guests were told to be seated by 12, and when some were not, were gently but firmly reminded to do so. Mr. Howard and his agreeable wife, Janette, appeared promptly at 12:15 escorted by officers of the Asia Society led by Doris Ho, and Australias able ambassador to the Philippines, Ruth Pearce.

Speeches came first, and lunch followed, in case anyone had to leave early, which they did not since the clockwork agenda ended at 1:35. Asia ...
