Jul. 23--Yellow, shriveling plants are showing up in Mesilla Valley chile fields, reminding growers of the years 1995 and 1999 when various diseases devastated their chile crops.

This time, the yellowing and stunting are signs of curly top virus, which hampers the chile plant's normal growth and pod production.

But the disease-incident rate currently is not at a high level, according to Natalie Goldberg, New Mexico State University Extension Service plant scientist.

The curly top virus is spread by an insect known as the beet leaf hopper.
