Health care spending per privately insured person increased 9.6% in 2002, marking a slight decrease from 2001's rate of 10% but still four times faster than the U.S. economy grew in 2002, according to a recent report in the journal Health Affairs.

For the second year in a row, hospital spending accounted for the single largest percent of the increase, amounting to about 51%. Health Affairs reports that spending on hospital inpatient services increase 6.8%, while spending on outpatient hospital care increased 14.6% and remained the fastest-growing category of health care spending for the second year in a row.
