Pierce County Sheriff's Deputy Gabriel Fajardo was acquitted of second-degree rape on Feb. 19, 1997. The jury deadlocked on a related indecent liberties charge.
Fajardo met the alleged victim, a 39-year-old woman, at a coffee shop. He invited her to a martial arts class he taught in Tacoma after she told him her son might like to take lessons.
She went to the class on Aug. 8, 1996, and Fajardo showed her around the building during a break. She said Fajardo tried putting her arms around him, according to court records.
