1940 sounded the deathknell of a decade that few cared to remember. As the year began, the music industry was filled with guarded hope and optimism, born of the conviction that business conditions were destined to improve. This widespread optimism was not groundless--the nation's banks were solvent, unemployment had receded to manageable levels, public faith in the economy has been restored to a large extent, and music sales were enjoying an uptrend; however, it was qualified.
