Chronic pain baffles docs, leaving patients to go it alone.(Arts and Lifestyle)

Cindy Steinberg enjoys going to concerts and plays, but when she reserves tickets for a show, she asks about more than the view.

"I call ahead to find out where I can lay my mat to lie down flat during intermission," Steinberg said. "I can't be upright for more than 90 minutes at a time, so (my chronic pain) leads to a lot of strange things."

Steinberg, 47, of Arlington has suffered debilitating back pain since a file cabinet toppled onto her in 1995. Unable to work, drive or bend down to pick up her daughter, she has seen nearly a dozen doctors and endured everything from epidural steroid injections to acupuncture with no improvement.
