Since April, brush pickup has cost Auburn more than $38,000 and used up 2,088 hours of employee labor.

The brush is unsightly and costly and takes much of the public works staff away from other areas of the city that need attention, such as parks and playgrounds, said City Manager John Salomone.

At Thursday's city council meeting, Salomone proposed that the city begin enforcing its ordinance on yard waste and set a schedule for brush pickup.

The ordinance limits the size and weight of brush and how it's collected.

He said city crews would hit quadrants of the city three or four times a year.
