Class I railroads and others supporting the mandatory tagging of all freight cars for Automatic Equipment Identification ran into strong opposition from non-Class I car owners at an open meeting on AEI March 21 in St. Louis.
It is not the concept that is being challenged, nor is it the technology. But private car owners and smaller railroads are not happy with the costs they will be facing. At the same time, they're not convinced of the deep-down commitment of the Class I's, in terms of installing enough wayside readers to make the system work well, of sharing data, and of proving benefits to anybody but the largest railroads.
