Jul. 29--HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif.--The world's largest surf contest. An extreme-sports competition. A pro beach volleyball tournament.
During the next three weeks, Surf City's youthful, tanned and athletic action-sports culture will be on display for an international television audience.
The U.S. Open of Surfing, the X Games and the AVP pro beach volleyball events are powerful marketing tools for a city struggling to outpace Fullerton and Garden Grove for tourism dollars.
The August contests should cap what has already been a profitable summer ...
