Redefining `Energy Independence' Only the Beginning

Reports of its demise are most premature, insists Rep. Norman F. Lent, R-N.Y. He considers the concept of energy independence most viable for the United States in the 1990s.

But as the chief minority member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee accepted the 1991 Americans for Energy Independence Energy Leadership Award last week in Washington, he hastened to add that energy independence will need to mean something very different now to the U.S. from what it implied in the early 1970s.
