Aug. 1--Volkswagen Beetle, the little car with the big bug-eyed headlights and a look that only a mother could love, is no more.

Production of the subcompact car that con...uered the world stopped shortly after 9 Wednesday morning at the last place where they were manufactured, a plant in Puebla, Mexico, about an hour's drive south of Mexico City. It's next door to another facility that produces the model that, to most eyes, is its natural successor -- the New Beetle.
