SAN FRANCISCO _ Willie Mays.
Even now _ 31 years, two months and not quite three weeks after he last played in a Giants uniform _ the name can catapult me backward in time.
Even now _ after years of seeing and talking to Mays in the course of my job _ the name still carries a mythical glow.
An aura of excitement. And of absolute certainty: that he was the very best.
Willie Mays is in the news again, as his godson and heir to greatness methodically attacks his career home run record. Barry Bonds is just 14 home runs shy of Mays' mark of 660, which is third on the all-time list.
