Playwright Tony Kushner created a cultural sensation a decade ago with the Pulitzer Prize-winning "Angels in America." Yet, unlike so many successful plays that went on to other media, specifically movies, "Angels" had its run in New York City and in touring productions, including one here in Chicago, and then seemed to disappear.

The self-proclaimed "gay fantasia" about life in the "Morning in America" Reagan era was a bravura performance on Kushner's part, deftly mixing comedy with drama, but it remained a distant echo to the mainstream audience.
