Literally- and philosophically speaking, tortilla chips maintained their mastery as one among just a few categories in salted snack that showed any solid sales gains in 2002.
More tortilla brands were up than down last year, with Procter & Gamble's Torengos up an astounding 5,059% in dollar sales and 4,953% in volume. On the other hand, Frito-Lay, with five Tostitos brands in the Top 20, showed only one as doing well. Its Scoops variety, however, is such a blockbuster that it, well, seemed to have scooped all the rest of the sales for the other Tostitos brands and earned a higher percentage of dollar sales than the other four lost combined.
