CLAMBERING up the side of a crater on Mount Etna we picked up pieces of lava left by recent eruptions and found they were still hot. We had travelled by coach and mini bus most of the way up to a height of 2,500mbut our excursion finished with a short walk among the buried cable car posts and lunar style landscape.
The volcano looked impressive from a distance. Up close,it proved to be bleaker and blacker than I had imagined.
We were not allowed to go any higher as Etna is still active but we could see last year's newly created crater still spewing out gases in the distance.
